What is Ceylon Cinnamon?
Cinnamon is a spice obtained from the inner bark of the Cinnamon tree (Cinnamomum zeylanicum). This woody representative is a medium-sized evergreen tree of a large genus. Its natural habitat is the territories of Sri Lanka.
The spice prepared by him is also called "true" cinnamon, and the other name of the tree is Cinnamomum verum (verum - true).
To obtain our familiar cinnamon sticks, strips are cut from the inner layer of the bark. They are allowed to dry and roll up, thus forming the characteristic sticks.
The essential oils and active substances of cinnamon are concentrated in them. They can then be grated and grated or used to make an extract.
Differences between individual representatives of the genus
In addition to Ceylon cinnamon, a number of other representatives of this genus are also known. The bark prepared from them also has similar aromatic qualities, but the unique content of Ceylon cinnamon makes it expensive and significantly rarer.
The most famous representative is Chinese cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia). It has stronger aromatic properties than Ceylon, due to the higher content of cinnamaldehyde (up to 95%). For this reason, it is more widespread in the cooking and food industry.
However, its useful active ingredients are in much lower concentrations than in "real" cinnamon. In addition, Chinese cinnamon is several times richer in coumarin - a toxic substance that is in minimal quantities in Ceylon cinnamon.
This accounts for the considerably higher price of Ceylon cinnamon, and also explains the frequent cases in which Chinese cinnamon is offered for Ceylon cinnamon.
Composition and properties of cinnamon
Cinnamon has been known since ancient times. It is famous for many useful qualities and properties. We owe this to its rich composition of essential oils, as well as many other biochemical compounds.
The main active ingredients found in cinnamon are:
- Cinnamaldehyde
- Cinnamyl acetate
- Cinnamyl alcohol
- Eugenol
- Tannins
- Cinnamic acid and a number of others.
The methylhydroxy halon polymer is also proving to be of great clinical importance.
Numerous independent research and clinical studies conducted in vitro and in vivo prove numerous beneficial effects of Ceylon cinnamon on the body.
Some of them are:
- Anti-inflammatory properties
- Antimicrobial activity
- Reducing the frequency of cardiovascular diseases
- Improved cognitive function
- Reduced risk of colon cancer.
The bark of the cinnamon tree is rich in both type A and type B procyanidins.
These procyanidins contribute to:
- Antioxidant action
- Antimicrobial action
- Anti-inflammatory action
- Antipyretic (temperature-lowering) activity
- Gastro-protective activity.
However, the most well-known and sought-after quality of cinnamon in the modern world is its ability to help fight diabetes and the accompanying changes associated with metabolic syndrome.
Mechanism of action
Scientific experts propose several different potential mechanisms for the reduction of blood glucose and glycemic load.
Cinnamon inhibits the glucose transporter proteins GLUT5 and GLUT2, which are found in the cells of the intestinal lining. In this way, it slows down and reduces the amount of glucose absorbed into the bloodstream. This is a safe way to reduce postprandial serum glucose levels by not absorbing the entire amount.
In addition to the fact that they slow or inhibit the absorption of glucose, the active substances in cinnamon stimulate another transport protein - GLUT4. The role of this protein is to transport the glucose molecule from the serum into the cells. In this way, it directly regulates blood sugar levels.
Experimental studies indicate that the intake of cinnamon extract stimulates the burning of glucose in the glycolysis process and stimulates the production of glycogen from the glucose circulating in the blood, which is currently not needed by our body. This automatically means that glucose synthesis is inhibited.
Through complex enzymatic biochemical reactions and interactions between receptors, cinnamon stimulates the release of insulin from the pancreas. Polyphenolic compounds, catechin and epicatechins, have a stimulating effect on insulin receptors. The same compounds also inhibit an enzyme that is responsible for inactivating insulin receptors. In this way, insulin receptors are "released", ready to transport glucose inside the cell.
Together with the potentiation of the insulin receptor, the greater amount of insulin secreted contributes to the normalization of blood sugar levels. After taking cinnamon, there was a significant reduction in postprandial glucose levels, especially after eating sugary products.
Cinnamaldehyde is the most abundant active ingredient in cinnamon extract. An interesting fact about it is that it has the ability to reduce plasma glucose concentration more effectively than an approved pharmaceutical drug for type 2 diabetes - metformin.
Benefits of Ceylon Cinnamon in Appetite Control
Benefits for diabetics
Ceylon cinnamon is one of the most valuable plant sources used in the fight against diabetes and pre-diabetic conditions. It is believed that, in addition to preventing the disease, it serves to reduce the potential complications of already developed diabetes.
Due to the many active substances and various clinical studies surrounding cinnamon, it is recognized as a modulator of the metabolic changes that accompany people suffering from diabetes.
Nowadays, cinnamon is available in extract form as a dietary supplement and adjunctive therapy for metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes.
A series of experiments proved that long-term cinnamon intake was directly associated with reduced serum glucose levels. The acceptable daily dose is 0.1 mg/kg of body weight.
Benefits for lipid metabolism
Metabolic syndrome is a condition in which all organs and tissues are affected, the regulation of a number of processes responsible for the homeostasis of the body and others.
Cinnamon, with its nature rich in active biochemicals, has been proven to affect blood sugar levels. High values, as well as disturbances in its exchange, directly lead to disturbances in fat exchange.
High insulin combined with low insulin receptor sensitivity and high glucose levels make the environment in the body unfavorable for fat melting. This is the prerequisite for increasing the serum levels of triglycerides.
Their high values predispose to the appearance of:
- Vascular accidents
- Heart attacks
- Strokes
- Other thrombosis and embolism.
Regulation of sugar levels, maintenance of low insulin levels and direct action on lipid metabolism of cinnamon create a prerequisite for normalization of free triglycerides. Hyperlipidemia (high serum triglycerides) is a condition more dangerous than high cholesterol.
Cinnamon has a regulatory and balancing effect on cholesterol values. Research shows that in addition to lowering levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or "bad cholesterol"), it increases levels of HDL (good cholesterol). With these two functions and its influence on fat metabolism, cinnamon is an ideal cardioprotective supplement.
In vivo studies prove that Ceylon cinnamon extract leads to vasodilation and lowering of blood pressure values.
Benefits for inflammation
Cinnamon is probably the most used spice, which is also used as a food additive. The reason for this is its rich composition and numerous clinical studies that scientifically prove its action and the beneficial effects it has on the body.
Eugenol and especially cinnamaldehyde are also responsible for another well-known property of cinnamon, namely its strong anti-inflammatory effect.
The direct action of cinnamaldehyde on cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) has been proven in the laboratory. Blocking this enzyme results in stopping or greatly suppressing the production of prostaglandins, the molecules responsible for inflammation.
A number of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs work by exactly the same mechanism. Therefore, we can say that the regular intake of cinnamon extract has an anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effect in a number of conditions related to chronic inflammation.
Such are, for example:
- Old traumas
- Arthritis
- Neuritis and others.
Benefits against free radicals
As we have already discussed, the rich variety of active substances found in the composition of Ceylon cinnamon is inevitably associated with a great antioxidant potential.
The cocktail of polyphenols, catechins, terpenes, cinnamaldehyde and many others improves the redox potential of our body and actively pursues and inactivates free oxygen and nitrogen radicals.
Clinical studies prove that cinnamon inhibits lipid peroxidation. This stabilizes cell membranes and normalizes the transport of substances in both directions. In this way, it protects the tissue proteins and genetic information from the harmful action of free radicals.
Oxidative stress leads to forcing the work of the adrenal glands and the release of large amounts of cortisol - known as the stress hormone. Its high levels in the blood lead to water retention, slowing of metabolism, insulin resistance and increased "storage" of fat in the depots.
Cinnamon helps to reduce oxidative stress, thereby normalizing metabolic functions and optimizing the work of our body.
Other benefits
In vivo studies provide encouraging data on the effect of taking cinnamon extract not only on diabetes but also on the complications that follow from it.
Cinnamon clinically reduces nephropathy and neuropathy that result from diabetes. The antioxidant effect probably underlies this phenomenon, as well as the ability to lower blood sugar levels.
Due to the high content of glucose circulating freely in the blood circulation, in diabetes there is an increased concentration of glycated proteins, hormone-induced cytokine overproduction and accumulation of proteins in the mesangial matrix. For this reason, the function of the glomeruli is disturbed and the renal parenchyma and its functions are permanently damaged.
Taking cinnamon extract controls blood sugar levels and increases the antioxidant potential of our body, thereby significantly delaying the effects of dysmetabolic syndrome in diabetes.
Also known from folk medicine is the beneficial effect of cinnamon on stomach problems, heartburn, pain and even ulcers. The scientific explanation for this is that Ceylon cinnamon reduces the secretion of hydrochloric acid from the stomach lining. At the same time, it stimulates the secretion of mucus, which has a protective effect on the mucous membrane.
Anti-cancer effect
Ceylon cinnamon, and in particular the cinnamaldehyde contained in it, exhibits an anti-cancer effect on various cell populations of cancer cells.
Human studies show that Ceylon cinnamon has the ability to neutralize free radicals and has a pronounced anti-cancer effect.
It is carried out through the storage of DNA and the structural proteins encoded by it, as a result of reduced oxidative stress.
Antimicrobial effect
In vitro and in vivo clinical studies reveal the antimicrobial potential of Ceylon cinnamon.
Some of the findings indicate that:
- It is effective in the treatment of salmonella infections and some anaerobic bacteria.
- Acts as a fungicide for Candida infections and skin saprophytes.
- Shows antiviral activity against influenza A (flu A).
- It has a general strengthening and immunomodulating effect.
Combined action of Ceylon cinnamon and chromium picolinate
In our Appetite Control product, as partners in the fight against appetite, we have chosen two ingredients with a lot of scientific evidence for their effectiveness. We've already introduced you to the many benefits and mechanisms of action of Ceylon Cinnamon, and now it's Chroma's turn.
Although the product is called Appetite Control, there is nothing in its ingredients that directly suppresses the appetite so that we do not feel the need for food.
Appetite suppression in this case is a side effect of the mechanism of action, namely regulation of insulin secretion and glucose metabolism.
High levels of insulin, combined with insulin resistance, lead to the appearance of a large appetite. In people with normal pancreatic function and no problems in insulin metabolism, hunger is associated with food intake.
This, in turn, signals the pancreas to release insulin. After glucose levels normalize, there is a refractory period in which insulin is low and blood sugar is within normal limits.
When its levels drop, the brain is again signaled to release the hunger hormone - ghrelin. After that again comes food intake and insulin release.
In people with impaired glucose tolerance and insulin resistance, food intake leads to the release of large amounts of insulin. Due to the resistance of the receptors to it, it fails to lower blood sugar levels and our cells are "hungry".
This causes more hunger hormone to be released and unnecessarily large amounts of food, mostly carbohydrates, to be consumed. All this leads to obesity, metabolic syndrome and all the negative consequences associated with it.
The effect of cinnamon is precisely to regulate the levels of insulin, as well as those of sugar.
Another known substance that performs a similar function is chromium picolinate.
What is chromium picolinate and what are its benefits?
Chromium picolinate is an organic salt of the element chromium in its third valence and picolinic acid.
The role of chromium in the human body is reduced to participation in the processes of metabolizing carbohydrates and fats. It also participates in the activation and increase of insulin receptors, which in turn leads to regulation in the release of adequate levels of insulin.
It is considered an essential, irreplaceable element. It occurs relatively widely in human food sources, but a very small percentage of it is absorbed by the intestinal mucosa.
Clinical studies have found that chromium levels in people with type 2 diabetes are lower than in healthy people. The addition of chromium as a dietary supplement in people suffering from type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance leads to better control of serum glucose levels.
Studies have shown that in people with proven type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance, taking chromium as a dietary supplement as adjunctive treatment can reduce the dose of metformin.
The effect of chromium to improve the sensitivity of the insulin receptor and reduce blood glucose values is not observed in healthy people, but only in those with impaired metabolism.
Chromium picolinate supports metabolism in people with severe metabolic syndrome, helping to provide more energy and a more complete metabolism.
What are the benefits of taking VitaOn's Appetite Control?
Appetite Control is a dietary supplement that, as its name suggests, leads to appetite regulation.
Control over appetite and the desire to consume food is actually a complex series of interaction of nervous and humoral factors, hormones and enzymes. There are many factors that serve the body as feedback signals and mechanisms that are triggered at certain times and conditions.
One of the most important factors in appetite is the blood sugar level. People who have impaired carbohydrate metabolism, insulin resistance or suppressed insulin production often suffer from uncontrollable appetite. It most often targets the intake of simple carbohydrates, sweets and processed foods.
Taking Appetite Control is suitable for all people who wish to improve their insulin sensitivity and optimize the absorption of carbohydrates. Along with the reduced appetite, you will also have increased energy levels.
Appetite Control will enable your body to work under optimal conditions for melting fat and normalizing body weight, as well as regulating cholesterol levels.
Appetite Control is an all-natural, high-quality food supplement in the form of tablets.
